Presentations were held at DTs Hotel. The All Ordinaries Index still hasn't recovered from the global Schnapps shortage stemming from the night's celebrations! Sunday saw a contingent of Melbourne and Adelaide Spikers out for a spot of lawn bowls! It was a great way to relax in the sunshine and try out a different sport. The cheap drinks helped too... Thanks to Kin for
providing the 3 beautiful perpetual trophies.
Pride MarchSunday 30th January In the perfect weather about a dozen Spikers demonstrated their pride and community spirit by marching down Fitzroy Street. The huge beach balls certainly made us visible while Jen got friendly with the natives. A big thanks to Drew for organising the rabble and to our supporters in the crowd for giving us a cheer. DTs Golden Stiletto RallySaturday 12th February A small but dedicated group of Spikers joined in the barely controlled hilarity around the streets of Richmond. Shoppers on Bridge Road didn't know quite what to make of the Glamourhead "Superheros" in capes and underwear, a couple of Greek nonna's, the trashy suburban wedding party, "Ladies" from Little Brittain and the purple and yellow Spikers as they gallivanted around looking for clues. Volleyball skills came to the fore and earned extra points, as did Craig's latent crownie sculling ability. Midsumma CarnivalSunday 13th February In it's second year, the Sporting Precinct provided a great opportunity to network with other sporting organisations and promote the Spikers to the wider community. Our fabulous merchandise was a hit too. Having our stand right next to the Sports Trainers Association who were giving free massages was an unexpected benefit! Sydney Freezone Mardi Gras Tournament26th-27th February In the notoriously tough competition the boys from Dragon came a very commendable 3rd place. Good Friday Volleyball-athonSaturday 25th March Melbourne Spikers had three teams competing in the fundraising volleyball tournament at Kew on Good Friday and each contributed $140 towards the RCH Good Friday Appeal. It was a good day for team building and Melbourne Spikers Blue had to work hard in the Men's (basically A grade) comp. (But it put them in good form for their next Thursday night competition match, where they soundly beat the top team!!) None of our teams made it to the finals, but hey, that wasn't what it was about. Kew Volleyball FinalThursday 14th April Congratulations to Melbourne Spikers' Blue (Stephen, Darren, Tim, Frankie, Dean & Ferdie) for their convincing win in the Kew Volleyball B grade grand final on the 14th April. After giving away the first 2 sets Blue hung on and with a change of tactics managed to claim the last 3 sets. This was their last season together so it's fantastic that the boys from Blue went out champions after 3 years, congratulations! Adelaide Spikers ANZAC TournamentSaturday 23rd April Two Melbourne Spikers teams ventured across the border on Anzac Day
weekend to participate in the Adelaide Spikers' Anzac Challenge. Winterdaze TournamentSaturday 11th June The wet and woolly weather didn't deter the spirits of the 14 teams. With only 2 teams registered as A grade and two as C grade (leaving 10
B grade teams), we decided to have a combined draw for the tournament to
ensure all teams had a reasonable number of games. This made for some
interesting and surprising results- with a "B" grade team defeating an "A"
grade team in the qualifying rounds.
DT's graciously hosted the presentation and Bruce didn't even bother feigning surprise when MC Craig managed to wrangle cheap schnapps out of him again. Much celebration and social lubrication occurred and stories are still emerging, pending legal consultation. A certain radio personality was seen staggering across Fitzroy St in the wee small hours, but the Spikers are a discreet bunch... Many thanks to our sponsors for making the event possible and a huge success:
Winterdaze Photo Gallery - more photos soon... G-Force win South Yarra Competition!Wednesday 22nd June The newest Melbourne Spikers team, G-force, made it to the finals of the budding South Yarra Mixed Social competition on Wednesday. Having finished top of the ladder for the season, G-force had a tough semi-final against "Friends forever2", winning 17-25, 25-19, 26-24. Later that evening, G-force had to face "Don't Let it Bounce" in the Final. With an enthusiastic cheer squad and renewed confidence, G-force won the final 25-17, 19-25, 25-19, 25-13. Congratulations! Trivia NightSunday 18th September The 2nd annual Trivia Night was another huge success! The place
was packed, the competition was fierce, the scores were tight, the prizes
were plentiful- the joint was swinging!
Annual General MeetingTuesday 11th October Thanks to all the members who attended the AGM after training. The committee was re-elected unopposed and also gained Troy to fill the vacant sixth position. We didn't quite beat the record for the shortest AGM on record, we'll try again next year! Adelaide Feast TournamentSaturday 29th October Thanks to the Adelaide Spikers for yet another fabulous weekend. B grade was dominated by Melbourne with all 3 placings won by the tourists. The 5 girls in A grade put up a tough fight but numbers won out. A big congrats to Netty (Phoenix) for taking out the B grade Most Valuable Player. As usual the social events almost overshadowed the volleyball and there was a bit of hotel swapping going on. Canberra Good Neighbour Tournament26th-27th November With yet another set of gorgeous uniforms Melbourne Spikers Blue set out to teach the straight boys how to play. Unfortunately due to the effects of a lesbian death metal rock band the night before our heroes just missed the finals by a few points. With most of the Sunday to spare a shopping trip to Fishwick was quickly organised. Those purchases will be filling more than just stockings. End of Year PicnicSunday 11th December We could not have asked for more perfect weather. Much food was consumed and fluids drunk plus there was a little bit of very relaxed volleyball. A "girls vs boys" match assured controversy, especially as onlookers couldn't decide which team was which. On sets it was a draw, but just quietly the boys won on points... |
