Girls in London
April 17th - 22nd
The 2002 Sydney Gay Games stirred something deep within the Spiker
girls - a desire for international competition. The Lesbian Easter
Volleyball Tournament held in London was too big a temptation so
seven dedicated ladies headed off to quench their thirst!

Good Friday Volleyballathon
April 18th The Melbourne Spikers "Bunnies" entered the
inaugural Good Friday Appeal Volleyballathon organised by Kew
Volleyball. The Bunnies consisted of Scott, Liz, Tim, Stephen,
Drew, Kin, and Lee and our bright purple and yellow Gay Games uniforms
certainly made us stand out amongst the 7 teams attending. The
competition ranged from the social and relaxed to the serious trophy
hunters. We took a while to warm up and with the first 2 games being
against the eventual finalists it was a pretty tough way to start!
With our rotation and strategy now fine-tuned we won the remaining 4
games. Highlights included Liz's serving runs and Drew spiking a
spike! Congratulations to the officials and the Kew High School referees
who donated their time to organise a very efficient
tournament. With the entry fees and a raffle the day raised over $1200 for the
Royal Children's Hospital.
Winterdaze Tournament
June 7th
This was such a fantastic event that we've dedicated a separate page to
it!

Bump & Bowl
August 31st
Sunday night was bowling night for Spikers at Strike in Chapel Street:
We had a good turn out with 2 lanes chockfull of volleyballers utilizing their
"under the net!" skills & knocking down the odd pin or two (or ten) in the process - along with a healthy sprinkling of gutter balls.
It was fun playing with the crew in a different game & environment and
quite a number of very stylish bowlers were discovered - the laneway providing the perfect catwalk for bowl
vogueing.
After a couple of games, the bowling shoes reluctantly returned, some of us headed out into a cold winters' night up Chapel Street for a feed & post
games assessment.
Final verdict? - A great night with everyone getting into it. Thanks to the committee for the organizing & here's looking forward to the next gathering - did I hear someone say karaoke?
Stay tuned!
- Richard.

Adelaide Feast Tournament
8th November
A big thank you to the Adelaide Spikers for hosting a memorable
tournament. The Queens Arms Hotel and the Mars Bar have
requested prior warning of our next visit! Most of the stories
can not be published and the usual disclaimer of "what happens
in Adelaide stays in Adelaide" is used to protect the
not-so-innocent. Suffice to say that the "Poker Machine
of Truth" worked hard and unearthed a few gems... Oh
yeah, we played volleyball too!
Results:
A Grade: Melbourne Spikers FP def Vamous
B Grade: Crisis def Black Attack
C Grade: All Sorts def Bruce's Bruins
Congrats to Grace for winning the A Grade MVP!

Good Neighbours Tournament - Canberra
22nd, 23rd November For the 3rd year running Melbourne Spikers sent a
team to take part in Australia's largest open volleyball
tournament. The competition was tough but played in good spirit
and our fabulous purple and yellow uniforms made sure we were noticed! The
grudge match between our "sister" club from Sydney, Free
Spirit, turned into a 3-0 walkover, once again proving Melbourne's
superiority. The finals, played at the end
of the tough 2 day slog, tested all teams stamina. Our defence held
strong and we finished a very respectable 3rd place.
Thanks to Patrick for the photos:
